Freedom doesn't mean you can do anything, anywhere, anyhow. Then what is freedom? Join us at a special event in the Transylvania Lectures series to explore a deeply personal and transformative experience of freedom – both as a universal desire and as an individual journey through Andrei Zincă’s film, So, What’s Freedom? The story of love, survival and the thirst for freedom is inspired by real events in communist Romania in the 1950s and told from the perspective of today. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Andrei Zincă, this 2020 drama is based on Ana Blandiana’s novel Projects of the Past and has won multiple Audience Choice Awards at international festivals, including Sedona IFF and LA SeeFest. The film’s poetic storytelling and compelling performances by the Romanian cast will leave you reflecting on what freedom means in our times.
After the screening, join us for a thought-provoking conversation on how freedom is interpreted across generations. In 2024, we surely have a different definition of freedom, than the one we had in December '89 in Temesvár/Timișoara. How does today's generation perceive it? Andrei Zincă, director, and Balázs Kató, student at Mathias Corvinus Collegium engage in this topic in a post-screening discussion. How do personal responsibility and historical context shape our understanding of freedom?
Andrei Zincă studied at the Institute for Theatre and Film Arts (IATC) in Romania and the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. Before he left Romania in 1982, he contributed to eight features as a Camera Operator. His directorial debut, Rosa de America (1987), was a TV mini-series produced in Peru, his adopted home. He later became a leading TV director in the U.S. In Romania, he directed La Urgență, a local adaptation of E.R., winning multiple awards. His first theatrical feature, Puzzle for a Blind Man, followed in 2012. His 2023 documentary, Who I Am Not, has been showcased at over 80 festivals, earning 22 awards.
His partner in conversation will be Balázs Kató, a student of MCC University Program. He is pursuing degrees in Psychology at Babeș-Bolyai University and in International Relations and European Studies at Sapientia University.
