Bears loom large in our culture. There is something about them that is at once human-like and wild and exciting. Yet, outside specialist circles, little is known about these iconic animals. So much of what is said about bears is mostly or entirely wrong. Are bears really almost blind? Is a bear with cubs always deadly? What does it mean when a bear stands up and looks at you? So, what should you do if you meet a brown bear on a trail?
Join a veteran bear guide and wildlife campaigner for an evening to learn more about these wonderful but poorly understood animals. Julius Strauss will share his experience of a decade and a half watching and working around bears. He has had more than a thousand wild bear encounters. He is one of only a handful of Canadian bear guides certified to train new guides.
Julius Strauss was born in London. He became a war correspondent for a leading British daily newspaper in his twenties. After 15 years working on the frontline, he moved to the wilderness in Canada and retrained as a bear behavioralist and wilderness guide. Julius is the owner of Wild Bear Lodge, a bear-viewing lodge he runs in remotest British Columbia. He co-led a political campaign to end grizzly bear hunting in the province which led to a full hunting ban in 2017. His life story has been featured twice on the best-selling TV series: Ben Fogle’s New Lives in the Wild.
His partner in conversation at the event will be László Demeter, biologist and leader of the National Agency for Natural Protected Areas in Harghita County. He specializes in mapping natural values, man-nature relations, traditional cultural landscapes and natural values of Szeklerland.
