Our Transylvania Lectures series continues with a special guest. Andrew Greenwood is a professional dancer and an international ballet master, who supports physically and mentally challenged people of all ages to better understand the art of aging. With first hand experiences of the moments of struggle, growth, maturity and glory that come together when one is engaging in dance, be it professionally or a pure hobby, he founded the Dance for Health Foundation. As the head of education and research for the last three years, over 40 teachers have been educated internationally under his mentorship and classes were established for Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis in cities in the Netherlands, Italy and Australia. As a creator of Swicth2Move he is thriving in sharing his method in how to enhance the life of people with chronic physical or mental impairments.
Almost 800 million people suffer from mental health disorders worldwide. There is no question when one looks at these global figures. There is a need for a transition in some of the classical approaches used in healthcare. How can the arts contribute to easing the burden concerning these topics? Andrew Greenwood’s organisation has been implementing and developing “non-pharmacological complementary interventions.” He believes in contribution to the transformation of care and welfare, by creating open expertise networks and transdisciplinary co-creation to work on new practices and concepts of care. Art is an economically viable product which can assist in reducing the financial social burden of care. Culture/Art are not the final solution. But a great tool to create a discussion.
